Designing Sensory Joy in Public Spaces

Hi!

I’m Crissy Jarvis, an artist and designer fascinated by how we experience the world around us, specifically through our senses. I transform new and reclaimed materials into playful objects that explore sensory regulation/stimulation in public spaces, inviting stimming, sparking sensory joy, and making everyday environments more welcoming for neurodivergent individuals. I also work in photography and mixed media, creating tactile, playful pieces that invite you to notice and feel things differently.

PLING PONG

Pling Pong is a wall-mounted visual, tactile, and auditory public intervention. It invites passersby to spin it and take a moment to get lost in the sound, sight, and touch.

EMOTION MIRROR

Based on Robert Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions, this object reflects eight core feelings: happiness, trust, fear, surprise, sadness, disgust, anger, and anticipation. The center mirror is left empty, inviting you to notice, explore, and mimic your own expressions, building emotional awareness.

EXHALER

A kinetic piece for visual stimming. When you breathe on the reflective elements or walk past them, they move and shimmer in response.

Emotion Signal Light

Light with 8 emotion faces that are interchangeable for the user to be able to signal how they are currently feeling silently. Allowing for communication without words or emotional effort.
